That explains it! Casting & Forging A Big Difference?

In industrial production, we often hear the words ' casting ' and ' forging ', which are very different in the production proces

Casting

The casting process has a history of about 6000 years. Casting is a forming process. The whole process is to melt the metal into a liquid metal that meets a certain standard, and then cast it into a casting cavity that is compatible with the shape of the part. After its cold treatment and solidification, the method of obtaining parts or blanks.

Casting more common are gravity casting and low pressure casting. Gravity casting is a process of pouring liquid alloy into the mold for cold treatment. The casting method is simple and the cost is low. Low pressure casting is to press the liquid alloy into the mold with low pressure. Compared with gravity casting, it has less pores, strong density, high safety factor and strength.

Casting can produce more complex shape parts, a wide range of applications, as small as a few grams to hundreds of tons can be completed production ; at the same time, the unit price of casting raw materials is low, the source of raw materials is wide, and the price of finished castings is relatively cheap.

Forging

Forging is a slow forming, using forging machinery to apply pressure on the metal billet, so that it produces plastic deformation to obtain a certain mechanical properties, a certain shape and size of forgings processing method.

Forging can eliminate casting porosity and other defects in the process of metal smelting and enhance the integrity of the parts by mechanically deforming the heated metal under strictly controlled conditions ; forging improves the ductility of texture streamline and increases the fatigue resistance and toughness of castings by optimizing the microstructure. Due to the preservation of the complete metal flow line, the mechanical properties of the forgings are improved, and the high-pressure collision makes the molecules closer and the interaction force between the material molecules stronger. At the same time, forging can refine the grains in the production, and the forged products have smaller grains and higher toughness, which can cope with the important parts with high load and severe working conditions.
